Born in Halifax, Scott Macmillan enjoys a stellar reputation in Nova Scotia and abroad for his unusual versatility working in the fields of classical, pop, jazz, blues and celtic music. He is equally at home on the podium in the studio or behind a guitar. Scott is in great demand as a conductor, performer, composer/arranger and producer. Working professionally for more than 30 years he has played an integral role in widening the audience for the music of Atlantic Canada both nationally and internationally.

Acknowledged by Rita MacNeil at the 2005 ECMA Awards as an integral contributor to her success, Scott has played an equally pivotal role in the rise of the Rankin Family Band and the Nova Scotia Mass Choir. For his contributions Scott received a Doctor of Letters from Cape University in 1997. In December 2009 he was awarded the Roger Taylor Medal for Musical Accomplishment and in 2008 an Honorary Diploma from the NSCC School of Applied Arts. Scott joined the Faculty of Music at Dalhousie University in Halifax in 2008 as a Part-time Academic teaching guitar.

His composition Within Sight of Shore, premiered in 2008, was short-listed for the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor 2008 Masterworks Prize and is the subject of a Documentary of the same name to be screened in 2010. The work depicts the last Canadian warship sunk in WWII, HMSC Esquimalt, of which Scott’s father was the Commanding Officer. A second premiere in 2008, Currents of Sable Island explored the infamous Graveyard of the Atlantic and also received rave revues. In 2002, Macmillan’s immigration composition MacKinnon’s Brook Suite garnered him with an East Coast Music Award for Classical Recording of the Year. The Celtic Mass for the Sea, his celebrated environmental Choral Classical/Celtic composition and collaboration with Jennyfer Brickenden has enjoyed over 60 performances nationally and internationally including Heidelberg Germany in November 2009. In 2003 Macmillan composed his first Symphony SUMMUS and is regularly creating music for his on going 12-piece jazz ensemble, Scott n’ the Rocks, his creative collective, providing opportunities for musical expression and exploration through composition and improvisational performances.

Scott's creative passion has led to many exciting commissions, performances and opportunities to compose new works. Most recently Macmillan has been commissioned to compose a new work. Scott sets the poem by Irvine Carvery We Are Africville for percussion and Blue Engine String Quartet. The Silver Dart Centennial Association, (SDCA), Centre Bras d’Or Association and Celtic Colours International Festival, commissioned Scott to create, Suite Silver Dart, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of manned flight in Canada, by the Aerial Experiment Association, (A.E.A.) which premiered in October 2009. The flight of the Silver Dart took place on February 23, 1909, in Baddeck, Cape Breton. Macmillan is Music Director of Le Grand Cercle, which was co-created with writer and artistic director Paul Gallant. Performed annually since 2006 this musical is a cornerstone of a major community/cultural/tourism initiative in Cheticamp Cape Breton. The cast recording was nominated for 2008 ECMA Francophone Recording of the Year.

An exceptional guitarist and original member of The Guitar Summit, Scott is a multiple ECMA (East Coast Music Award) winner, for his recordings with the innovative group Puirt a Baroque, Bach Meets Cape Breton and also for his own collaborative recordings The Minnie Sessions Volumes 1, 2, & 3 and MacKinnon's Brook Suite which he composed for Ian MacKinnon and Symphony Nova Scotia (SNS). MacKinnon’s Brook Suite for bagpipe and orchestra was premiered with Symphony Nova Scotia and later broadcast for National CBC TV.

Macmillan played a pivotal role in highly successful Maritime Pops Series with Symphony Nova Scotia’s (SNS). He was the inaugural Host Conductor and Arranger for this series from the mid 1980’s to 2005. Throughout his time he built bridges, creating relationships between the classical world of SNS and the diversity of Nova Scotia's musical and cultural communities. This most popular Maritime Pops Series resulted in numerous sold-out performances every season. Macmillan’s unique abilities as a master guitar player had him delighting his audiences by performing with his guest artists on guitar from the podium.

Scott successfully partnered with Jennyfer Brickenden through their company Scojen Music Productions Ltd. and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) to co-consult and develop curriculum for their new Music Arts Program, which was launched in September 2007.

Scott's unique innovative and creative talent to explore music's vast mosaic makes him an exhilarating and energetic musical force whose performances are always fresh.
