Born
in Halifax, Scott Macmillan enjoys a stellar
reputation in Nova Scotia and abroad for his unusual
versatility working in the fields of classical, pop,
jazz, blues and celtic music. He is equally at home
on the podium in the studio or behind a guitar.
Scott is in great demand as a conductor, performer,
composer/arranger and producer. Working
professionally for more than 30 years he has played
an integral role in widening the audience for the
music of Atlantic Canada both nationally and
internationally.
Acknowledged by Rita MacNeil at the 2005 ECMA Awards
as an integral contributor to her success, Scott has
played an equally pivotal role in the rise of the
Rankin Family Band and the Nova Scotia Mass Choir.
For his contributions Scott received a Doctor of
Letters from Cape University in 1997. In December
2009 he was awarded the Roger Taylor Medal for
Musical Accomplishment and in 2008 an Honorary
Diploma from the NSCC School of Applied Arts. Scott
joined the Faculty of Music at Dalhousie University
in Halifax in 2008 as a Part-time Academic teaching
guitar.
His
composition Within Sight of Shore, premiered in
2008, was short-listed for the Nova Scotia
Lieutenant Governor 2008 Masterworks Prize and is
the subject of a Documentary of the same name to be
screened in 2010. The work depicts the last Canadian
warship sunk in WWII, HMSC Esquimalt, of which
Scott’s father was the Commanding Officer. A second
premiere in 2008, Currents of Sable Island explored
the infamous Graveyard of the Atlantic and also
received rave revues. In 2002, Macmillan’s
immigration composition MacKinnon’s Brook Suite
garnered him with an East Coast Music Award for
Classical Recording of the Year. The Celtic Mass for
the Sea, his celebrated environmental Choral
Classical/Celtic composition and collaboration with
Jennyfer Brickenden has enjoyed over 60 performances
nationally and internationally including Heidelberg
Germany in November 2009. In 2003 Macmillan composed
his first Symphony SUMMUS and is regularly creating
music for his on going 12-piece jazz ensemble, Scott
n’ the Rocks, his creative collective, providing
opportunities for musical expression and exploration
through composition and improvisational
performances.
Scott's
creative passion has led to many exciting
commissions, performances and opportunities to
compose new works. Most recently Macmillan has been
commissioned to compose a new work. Scott sets the
poem by Irvine Carvery We Are Africville for
percussion and Blue Engine String Quartet. The
Silver Dart Centennial Association, (SDCA), Centre
Bras d’Or Association and Celtic Colours
International Festival, commissioned Scott to
create, Suite Silver Dart, to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of manned flight in Canada, by the
Aerial Experiment Association, (A.E.A.) which
premiered in October 2009. The flight of the Silver
Dart took place on February 23, 1909, in Baddeck,
Cape Breton. Macmillan is Music Director of Le Grand
Cercle, which was co-created with writer and
artistic director Paul Gallant. Performed annually
since 2006 this musical is a cornerstone of a major
community/cultural/tourism initiative in Cheticamp
Cape Breton. The cast recording was nominated for
2008 ECMA Francophone Recording of the Year.
An
exceptional guitarist and original member of The
Guitar Summit, Scott is a multiple ECMA (East Coast
Music Award) winner, for his recordings with the
innovative group Puirt a Baroque, Bach Meets Cape
Breton and also for his own collaborative recordings
The Minnie Sessions Volumes 1, 2, & 3 and
MacKinnon's Brook Suite which he composed for Ian
MacKinnon and Symphony Nova Scotia (SNS).
MacKinnon’s Brook Suite for bagpipe and orchestra
was premiered with Symphony Nova Scotia and later
broadcast for National CBC TV.
Macmillan played a pivotal role in highly successful
Maritime Pops Series with Symphony Nova Scotia’s (SNS).
He was the inaugural Host Conductor and Arranger for
this series from the mid 1980’s to 2005. Throughout
his time he built bridges, creating relationships
between the classical world of SNS and the diversity
of Nova Scotia's musical and cultural communities.
This most popular Maritime Pops Series resulted in
numerous sold-out performances every season.
Macmillan’s unique abilities as a master guitar
player had him delighting his audiences by
performing with his guest artists on guitar from the
podium.
Scott
successfully partnered with Jennyfer Brickenden
through their company Scojen Music Productions Ltd.
and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) to
co-consult and develop curriculum for their new
Music Arts Program, which was launched in September
2007.
Scott's
unique innovative and creative talent to explore
music's vast mosaic makes him an exhilarating and
energetic musical force whose performances are
always fresh.
