Recorded in August 1997, Scott Macmillan Presents: The Minnie Sessions Vol. 3, follows in the tradition of The Minnie Sessions Vol. 1. and
Vol.2 The Minnie Sessions are a series of collaborations recorded
in Scott Macmillan's Inverness County, Cape Breton, home. The
play on words the "Mini Sessions" or rather the "Minnie Sessions"
comes from Minnie Adam's. She was among the last of the Cape Breton
natural healers. Minnie Adams' ancestors came from Scotland in
search of "the earth with energy," and who's home Scott and his
family now own.
During the recording sessions, Scott Macmillan and his featured
artists explore their musicality on an intimate level and in an
intimate setting. Drawing on Scott's genius as a musical facilitator,
originality and creativity are encouraged within a relaxed atmosphere.
The quality of the music is foremost for Tamarac Records. Hayward
Parrott brings his sensitive touch and unique expertise to the
recording and engineering of The Minnie Sessions.
Fasten your seat belts for Volume 3 :
When multi-SOCAN/ECMA "Song of the Year" winner, Lennie Gallant delivers soulful renditions of his haunting "Island Clay" and
his new song'Knots and Tangles".
The internationally acclaimed Cape Breton fiddler and fiddle tune
composer, Jerry Holland, brings his own zest to the recording in the "Dancing Jigs" and
the "Dedication Group."
Jerry is joined by the vibrant virtuoso Newfoundland Acadian accordion
player Bernard Felix, in "Bernard's Favorites," a group of Jerry
Holland tunes and also in a set of heritage tunes passed down
through the Benoit/Felix family, "Grandfather's Jigs".
Doug Reach and Scott first met as students at Dalhousie in the
Guitar Dept. Now some twenty years later Doug is the head of the
Guitar Dept. at Dalhousie and is a neighbour of Scott's. Winner
of an International Guitar Competition in 1982, Doug brings both
his playing and collaborative skills to the fore in "Stadacona
Park" and "Merrily Down the Mull River".
Scott Macmillan is the co-winner of the 1998 ECMA Instrumental
Award for his work on "The Minnie Sessions Volume 1". Scott encirles
Volume 3 with a series of solos, duets, and trios with his featured
guest artists. His mastery as a guitarist and composer are demonstrated
on a mixture of original tunes including his Cape Breton style
fiddle tunes for guitar in medleys like "Jigging on the Back Steps"
and in his up beat numbers such as "Theme from a Corner House".
